Brown vs. Green Compost Materials: Getting the Ratio Right

Why the brown and green compost ratio matters
Every compost pile runs on a balance between carbon and nitrogen. Gardeners shorthand this as “browns” and “greens,” and getting the mix roughly right is the single biggest factor in whether your pile turns into rich, crumbly compost in a few months or sits around as a smelly, soggy mess for a year.
Browns are carbon-rich materials. They tend to be dry, tan or gray, and slow to break down on their own. Greens are nitrogen-rich materials, usually moist and fresh. Microorganisms in the pile use carbon for energy and nitrogen for building proteins and reproducing, so when the ratio skews too far in either direction, decomposition slows or turns unpleasant.
The commonly cited target is roughly 25 to 30 parts carbon to 1 part nitrogen by weight, but you don’t need a lab to hit that. A simpler rule of thumb for home piles is to aim for about two to three parts browns to one part greens by volume. That’s a good starting point you can adjust based on how your pile behaves.

Browns supply the carbon that gives microbes energy and keeps the pile from turning into a slimy, airless mass. They also add bulk and structure, which helps oxygen move through the pile.
- Dried fallen leaves (one of the best all-around browns)
- Straw and hay that has gone dry and brown
- Shredded cardboard and paper egg cartons
- Newspaper, torn or shredded (avoid glossy inserts)
- Sawdust from untreated wood, used sparingly
- Dried cornstalks and cut-up dead plant stems
- Pine needles, added in moderate amounts
- Wood chips and small twigs (best chipped or shredded first)
- Dryer lint from natural-fiber fabrics
- Brown paper bags, torn into strips
Browns are often the easiest ingredient to stockpile. Many gardeners rake and bag extra fall leaves specifically to have a carbon source on hand through the following spring and summer, when kitchen scraps tend to pile up faster than dry material.
Green materials cheat sheet
Greens supply nitrogen, which fuels the rapid microbial growth that heats up a pile and drives active decomposition. They also tend to hold more moisture, which helps keep the whole system from drying out.
- Fresh grass clippings (added in thin layers, not thick mats)
- Vegetable and fruit scraps from the kitchen
- Coffee grounds and paper filters
- Fresh green plant trimmings and spent flowers
- Eggshells (technically neutral, but commonly tossed in with greens)
- Fresh weeds that haven’t gone to seed
- Tea leaves and compostable tea bags without synthetic mesh
- Manure from herbivores such as chickens, rabbits, or livestock
- Trimmed green hedge clippings
Be cautious with a few items that are technically green but cause problems: meat, dairy, and oily foods can attract pests and create odors, and diseased plant material can spread pathogens back into your garden once the compost is used.

How to layer and adjust your pile
You don’t need to weigh anything to build a workable pile. Start by laying down a thicker base of browns, then alternate with thinner layers of greens, roughly in a two-to-one or three-to-one ratio by volume. Think of it like a lasagna: a good scoop of dry leaves, a smaller scoop of kitchen scraps, another scoop of leaves, and so on.
Once the pile is built, let it tell you what it needs.
- If the pile smells like ammonia or feels slimy and wet, it has too much nitrogen. Mix in more dry browns and turn the pile to add air.
- If the pile isn’t heating up and materials aren’t breaking down, it likely has too much carbon or isn’t moist enough. Add more greens or a bit of water, and turn it to redistribute.
- If the pile smells rotten or sulfurous, it’s usually too wet and compacted. Add dry browns and turn it more frequently to restore airflow.
Moisture matters as much as the ratio itself. Aim for the texture of a wrung-out sponge: damp but not dripping. Dry climates may need extra water worked in; rainy climates may need a cover or extra browns to soak up excess moisture.
Common mistakes to avoid
A few habits trip up new composters more than anything else.
Piling on too many fresh grass clippings at once is a classic mistake. Grass mats down into a dense, airless layer that turns slimy and starts to smell. Always mix fresh clippings with browns or spread them in thin layers.
Adding only kitchen scraps without balancing them with dry material is another common issue. A pile that’s all greens will be wet, heavy, and prone to odor no matter how often you turn it.
On the other end, dumping a huge volume of dry leaves in fall without adding any greens leaves the pile essentially dormant. Carbon alone breaks down extremely slowly without nitrogen to feed microbial activity.
Finally, skipping turning altogether slows any pile down, regardless of ratio. Turning reintroduces oxygen, which aerobic decomposition depends on, and helps distribute moisture and heat evenly so the whole pile finishes at roughly the same time.
