Blossom End Rot: The Real Cause and How to Stop It
Blossom end rot isn't a disease—it's a calcium delivery problem tied to watering. Learn the real cause and practical fixes for tomatoes and peppers.
It’s Not a Disease, and No Spray Will Cure It
If you’ve ever picked a tomato or pepper and found the bottom end collapsed into a dark, leathery, sunken patch, your first instinct might be to reach for a fungicide. Don’t bother. Blossom end rot isn’t caused by a fungus, bacteria, or virus, so nothing you spray on the leaves or fruit will stop it. It’s a physiological disorder, meaning it’s a symptom of how the plant is growing, not an organism attacking it.
That distinction matters because it changes where you look for a fix. You’re not hunting for a pathogen to kill. You’re troubleshooting the plant’s internal plumbing, specifically its ability to move calcium to where it’s needed most: the fast-growing tissue at the blossom end of the fruit.
The Real Cause: Calcium Can’t Get Where It’s Needed
Calcium is essential for building strong cell walls, and it moves through a plant almost exclusively through the xylem, the tissue that carries water up from the roots. Unlike sugars, which the plant can shuttle around flexibly, calcium travels one way, pulled along by the flow of water through transpiration.
Fruit tissue, especially at the blossom end, transpires very little compared to leaves. Leaves are constantly losing water to the air and pulling a strong calcium-laden stream behind them. Fruit doesn’t have that same pull, so it relies on steady root pressure and consistent water flow to get its share of calcium. When that flow is interrupted, even briefly, the blossom end tissue comes up short, its cell walls weaken, and the tissue breaks down into the sunken, dark spot you recognize as blossom end rot.
This is why soil calcium levels are almost never the actual problem. Most garden soils have plenty of calcium. The issue is delivery, not supply. That’s also why dumping calcium supplements onto the soil or spraying calcium chloride on leaves rarely solves the problem on its own. The calcium may already be there; it just isn’t reaching the fruit.
Watering Habits That Set the Stage
Because calcium transport depends on steady water movement, irregular watering is the single biggest trigger for blossom end rot. A garden that goes bone-dry for several days and then gets soaked disrupts the plant’s water flow right when fruit is sizing up and most vulnerable. The same goes for a heat wave that spikes transpiration demand faster than the roots can keep up, even if the soil itself isn’t dry.
A few conditions make this worse:
- Sandy or fast-draining soil that dries out between waterings
- Containers, which dry out faster than in-ground beds and have less buffering capacity
- Heavy nitrogen fertilization early in fruit set, which pushes rapid leafy growth that competes for the plant’s limited calcium supply
- Root damage from aggressive cultivation or transplant shock, which reduces the plant’s ability to take up water and calcium in the first place
Notice that none of these are about how much calcium is in the ground. They’re all about the plant’s ability to move water consistently.

Fixing It on Tomatoes and Peppers
The good news is that blossom end rot is fixable within a single growing season, and often within a few weeks. Focus on consistency rather than volume.
Water deeply and on a regular schedule rather than a little bit every day. For most tomatoes and peppers in typical garden soil, this means soaking the root zone thoroughly and letting the top couple of inches dry before watering again, rather than sprinkling shallowly and often. Shallow, frequent watering encourages roots to stay near the surface, where they’re more exposed to swings in moisture.
Mulch heavily around the base of the plants with straw, shredded leaves, or another organic material. A two- to three-inch layer moderates soil temperature and slows evaporation, which smooths out the moisture swings that trigger the disorder in the first place.
If you’re growing in containers, check moisture more often, since pots dry out far faster than garden beds, especially in hot weather. Consider self-watering containers or a simple drip setup if you’re prone to missing a day here and there.
Go easy on high-nitrogen fertilizer once plants start setting fruit. Excess nitrogen pushes vigorous vegetative growth that pulls water and calcium toward leaves at the expense of developing fruit.
Once you’ve corrected the watering pattern, new fruit that sets afterward should develop normally. Fruit that’s already affected won’t heal, but you can usually just cut away the damaged portion and eat the rest, since the disorder doesn’t make the fruit unsafe.
When Peppers Behave Differently Than Tomatoes
Peppers tend to show blossom end rot a bit differently than tomatoes. Because pepper fruit walls are thinner, the affected area can look more like a flattened, tan or brown patch rather than the deep, dark sunken lesion typical on tomatoes. It’s the same underlying cause, so the same watering and mulching fixes apply. Pepper plants are also somewhat more sensitive to inconsistent moisture during hot, dry spells, so if you’re growing both crops, prioritize your watering consistency checks on peppers first when a heat wave hits.
A Word on Calcium Sprays and Soil Amendments
Foliar calcium sprays marketed for blossom end rot are popular, but research consistently shows they have limited effect, largely because leaves absorb calcium poorly and calcium doesn’t move well from leaves to fruit even when it is absorbed. If your soil test shows genuinely low calcium, an amendment can help over time, but treat watering consistency as your primary lever and any calcium product as a minor supplement at best, not a fix on its own.
