Powdery Mildew vs. Downy Mildew: How to Tell Them Apart
Learn the visual, textural, and environmental differences between powdery mildew and downy mildew so you can diagnose and treat the right disease fast.
Powdery mildew and downy mildew sound like siblings, and gardeners lump them together constantly, but they are caused by entirely different organisms, behave differently in the garden, and respond to different treatments. Confuse the two and you can spend a whole season spraying the wrong product while the real problem spreads. Once you know what to look for, telling them apart takes about ten seconds with a hand lens or even just good light.
What powdery mildew looks like
Powdery mildew shows up as a dusty, talcum-powder coating on leaf surfaces, stems, and sometimes flower buds. It usually starts as small, circular white-to-gray patches that spread until they cover most of the leaf in a felty, flour-like film. You can often rub it off with a finger, which is a fast way to confirm the diagnosis. Leaves may curl, yellow, or turn brown and papery as the infection matures, but the powdery texture itself is the giveaway. It tends to appear first on the upper leaf surface and on the youngest growth, and it rarely bothers with the underside of the leaf the way its cousin does.
What downy mildew looks like
Downy mildew is sneakier at first glance. On the top of the leaf, you will see pale yellow to yellowish-green blotches with straight edges, because the discoloration is boxed in by the leaf veins rather than spreading in a rounded blob. Flip the leaf over and check the matching spot on the underside: that is where downy mildew reveals itself, with a fuzzy, grayish-purple, tan, or off-white growth that looks faintly like mold on old bread. That fuzzy underside growth is the single most reliable tell, since powdery mildew almost never produces it. Infected leaves often collapse and turn brown fairly quickly once the fuzzy growth appears.
Where each one shows up on the plant
Powdery mildew favors a wide, loose host list that includes squash and cucumbers, roses, lilacs, phlox, bee balm, and fruit trees like apples, and it tends to spread across the whole plant, including stems and buds, once established. Downy mildew is more host-specific, with different species targeting basil, grapes, brassicas like broccoli and kale, cucurbits, and impatiens, and it stays concentrated on foliage rather than moving into stems and flowers. If you see powdery coating on a rose bud, that is consistent with powdery mildew; if you see angular yellow patches marching along the veins of a basil leaf, downy mildew is the more likely suspect.

The weather conditions that favor each disease
This is where the two diseases really part ways, and it is the fastest diagnostic shortcut once you know it. Powdery mildew is caused by true fungi that do not need free water on the leaf surface to germinate. It thrives in warm, dry days paired with humid nights and shows up worst in shady, crowded plantings with poor air circulation, even during a dry spell. Downy mildew is caused by water-mold organisms called oomycetes that absolutely need a film of moisture on the leaf to infect it, so it explodes during cool, wet, humid stretches, especially in spring and fall, and in gardens with overhead irrigation, heavy dew, or poor drainage. If your garden has been dry for weeks and mildew appears, bet on powdery. If you just had a stretch of cool, rainy, humid weather, bet on downy.
Telling them apart at a glance
Run through this short checklist when you spot suspicious leaves. Check the texture: a dusty coating you can rub off points to powdery mildew, while a fuzzy patch confined to the leaf underside points to downy mildew. Check the shape: rounded, spreading spots suggest powdery mildew, while angular patches boxed in by veins suggest downy mildew. Check the location: powdery mildew colonizes the top of the leaf and spreads to stems and buds, while downy mildew’s real evidence hides on the underside. Check the recent weather: warm and dry favors powdery, cool and wet favors downy. Any two of these matching is usually enough to call it with confidence.
Treatment and prevention for each
Because the causes differ, the fixes differ too. For powdery mildew, prioritize airflow: space plants generously, thin crowded stems, and prune for an open canopy so leaves dry and air moves freely. Remove and discard infected leaves rather than composting them, and treat early outbreaks with sulfur, potassium bicarbonate, or a horticultural oil labeled for powdery mildew, choosing resistant varieties where they exist. For downy mildew, focus on keeping foliage dry: water at the soil line instead of overhead, water in the morning so any splashed leaves dry quickly, improve drainage, and increase spacing so humidity does not linger inside the canopy. Downy mildew is an oomycete, not a true fungus, so many standard fungicides do not touch it; look for products specifically labeled for downy mildew, such as copper-based sprays, and clear away infected debris at the end of the season since the pathogen can overwinter in plant material and soil.
