How to Get Rid of Fungus Gnats in Houseplants for Good
Learn the fungus gnat life cycle and why quick sprays fail, then use a soil-drying and larvae-targeting routine that actually ends infestations for good.
Why Fungus Gnats Keep Coming Back
If you’ve sprayed the leaves, wiped down the pot, and still see those tiny dark flies wobbling around your plant a week later, you’re not imagining it. Most first attempts at getting rid of fungus gnats fail because they target the adults you can see instead of the eggs and larvae living in the top few inches of soil. Adult fungus gnats are a symptom, not the problem. They live only about a week, but in that time each female can lay up to 200 eggs in damp soil, and those eggs hatch into larvae that keep the cycle going long after the adults you swatted are gone. Understanding that cycle is the key to actually ending an infestation instead of just thinning it out for a few days.
The Fungus Gnat Life Cycle, Step by Step
Fungus gnats go through four stages, and the whole cycle can complete in as little as three to four weeks in a warm home, which is why populations seem to explode so fast.
- Egg: Females lay eggs in cracks and crevices of moist soil, usually within the top inch or two where organic matter and fungi are most abundant. Eggs hatch in three to six days.
- Larva: This is the damaging stage. Larvae are translucent with a black head and feed on fungi, decaying organic matter, and, when populations are high, tender plant roots and root hairs. This stage lasts one to two weeks and is the only stage vulnerable to soil-applied treatments.
- Pupa: Larvae pupate in the soil for about a week before emerging as adults.
- Adult: Adults live roughly seven to ten days, mate, and lay the next batch of eggs almost immediately, restarting the cycle.
Because the stages overlap once an infestation is established, you’ll typically have eggs, larvae, pupae, and adults all present in the same pot at once. That’s why a single treatment rarely finishes the job. You need a strategy that interrupts the cycle at more than one stage over several weeks.
Let the Soil Dry Out (The Single Most Effective Fix)
Fungus gnat eggs and young larvae die quickly in dry conditions, so drying out the top layer of soil between waterings is the single most effective long-term fix and it costs nothing. Let the top one to two inches of soil dry completely before you water again, and check with a finger rather than guessing. For plants that prefer consistent moisture, water from the bottom by setting the pot in a shallow tray of water for 15-20 minutes so the surface layer, where gnats breed, stays drier while the roots still get what they need.
If you tend to overwater, consider it a bigger driver of infestations than anything you bring in from the outside. Overly wet, organic-rich soil is the exact habitat fungus gnat larvae need to survive, so consistently soggy potting mix will keep inviting them back no matter how many adults you catch or kill.

Trap the Adults While You Break the Cycle
Yellow sticky traps placed horizontally an inch or two above the soil surface won’t solve the underlying problem, but they do two useful things: they reduce the number of adults laying new eggs, and they let you monitor whether your soil-drying and treatment efforts are actually working. A sudden drop in trap catches over a couple of weeks is a good sign the cycle is breaking. Apple cider vinegar traps work on the same principle and are easy to make with a shallow dish, a splash of vinegar, and a drop of dish soap to break the surface tension.
Traps alone will never end an infestation because they don’t touch the eggs, larvae, or pupae developing in the soil. Use them as a monitoring and adult-reduction tool alongside the soil-focused steps below, not as your main strategy.
Treat the Soil to Kill Larvae
Once you’re managing moisture, target the larvae directly since that’s the stage doing the most damage and the one most responsive to treatment.
- Beneficial nematodes applied as a soil drench seek out and kill fungus gnat larvae and are one of the most reliable biological controls available for houseplants. Follow the product’s mixing and application instructions, since nematodes need to be kept moist and used relatively soon after purchase to remain viable.
- Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (Bti), sold as a mosquito bit or granule product, releases a bacterial toxin when watered into soil that specifically targets fly larvae, including fungus gnats, without harming your plant, pets, or beneficial insects.
- A quarter-inch layer of coarse sand or fine gravel on top of the soil creates a dry, inhospitable surface that makes it harder for adults to lay eggs and for larvae to survive near the top layer.
Whichever method you choose, plan on repeating it every one to two weeks for at least a month. Because eggs and pupae are more resistant to these treatments than active larvae, a single application will always miss some individuals that are protected in those stages when you treat.
Prevent Reinfestation for Good
Once the current population is under control, a few habits keep fungus gnats from establishing again. Inspect new plants closely before bringing them near your existing collection, and consider giving new arrivals a two-week quarantine period, since bringing in already-infested soil is one of the most common ways gnats spread through a home. Avoid topping off pots with fresh compost or unsterilized garden soil, which often carries eggs or larvae. Remove dead leaves and plant debris from the soil surface promptly, since decomposing organic matter is exactly what fungus gnat larvae feed on. And keep watering habits consistent with what each plant actually needs rather than watering on a fixed schedule, since chronically wet surface soil is what makes an infestation possible in the first place.
