Succulents and cacti evolved in places where rain is rare and drains away fast — sandy slopes, rocky outcrops, thin desert soils. Their roots are built to take up water quickly during a brief soak and then sit in dry air until the next one. Standard potting soil does the opposite of what those roots expect: it’s formulated to hold moisture for thirsty leafy plants, staying damp for days at a time.
That mismatch is the single biggest cause of succulent and cactus death indoors. It’s rarely underwatering. It’s a mix that stays wet around the roots long enough for rot to set in, especially in a plastic pot with a single small drainage hole and no airflow at the root zone. Choosing the right mix isn’t a fussy extra step — it’s the difference between a plant that lasts for years and one that mysteriously goes mushy a few weeks after you bring it home.
What “Fast-Draining” Actually Means
“Fast-draining” gets used loosely on plant labels, so it helps to know what you’re actually testing for. A good succulent mix should do three things:

- A small amount of organic matter — a bit of coco coir, peat, or compost gives roots something to anchor into and holds a modest amount of moisture, but it should be a minority ingredient, not the base.
- A stabilizing mineral component — fine gravel, granite grit, or calcined clay (the type used in some sports-field and terrarium products) adds weight and keeps the mix from floating or compacting.
Avoid mixes where the ingredient list leads with peat moss, compost, or “forest products” and only mentions perlite as an afterthought — that’s a general-purpose potting soil with a succulent label on it, not a true fast-draining mix.

- Pot material — Unglazed terra cotta already wicks moisture out through its walls, so you can use a slightly more moisture-retentive mix. Glazed ceramic or plastic pots hold moisture in longer, so lean toward a grittier, faster-draining mix to compensate.
- Drainage holes — A mix can only do so much if water has nowhere to go. If a pot has no drainage hole, a fast-draining mix reduces risk but doesn’t eliminate it; a shallow layer of pure grit at the very bottom won’t substitute for an actual drainage hole.
- Indoor humidity and airflow — Homes with dry heat in winter or strong air circulation dry out mixes faster, letting you use one with a bit more organic content. Humid bathrooms or enclosed terrariums call for a grittier mix to compensate.
- Plant type — Desert cacti and stone-like succulents (lithops, some euphorbias) want the leanest, most mineral mix you can find. Softer-leaved succulents like echeveria and sedum tolerate slightly more organic matter and moisture.
Building Your Own Mix vs. Buying One
Buying a bagged succulent-and-cactus mix is the simpler path, and it’s a reasonable choice as long as you check the ingredient list rather than trusting the label alone — flip the bag over and confirm perlite, pumice, or coarse sand appears near the top, not buried after peat and compost.
Building your own gives you more control and is often cheaper per pot once you have the components on hand. A workable starting ratio is roughly one part standard potting soil or compost, one part coarse sand or fine gravel, and one to two parts perlite or pumice — then adjust toward more mineral content if you notice the mix staying damp for more than a few days after watering. Mixing your own also lets you tailor grain size: cacti in small pots often do better with a finer grit blend, while larger succulents in bigger pots can handle chunkier material that leaves more air space.
Whichever route you choose, do a quick check before committing a whole bag to your plants: water a test pot thoroughly and see how fast it drains from the bottom, then check the mix’s moisture level again after two to three days. If it’s still visibly damp at that point, add more grit before you pot anything else in it.
